When Miss Julie, a school-teacher from the city, answer the call to teach at a small country school in 'them thar hill' of northern Arkansas, she is in for a shock. She confronts the primitive conditions and poverty head-on and is determined to make changes.
But her greatest challenge is a lonely, motherless boy named J. Earl, who shows his dislike for 'the dried-up, old-maid teacher' in numerous ways. Will she ever win his love and respect? It seems doubtful.
And will Julie ever make a difference in the lives of the set-in their-ways hill people, or will they make a difference in her?
